Colors of Wekiva
Have you noticed the beauty that surrounds the Wekiva community this Spring? I find myself looking at Facebook or reading emails and not observing the natural beauty in our community.
Consider putting your phone on “do not disturb” during you next walk around the Wekiva Loop. Say hello to our neighbors and become more present. Our fellow neighbor , Anna Baradi, captured beautiful photos of blooming trees in the community. I became curious and wanted to learn more about the Florida spring flowers lining the streets of Wekiva.
Tabebuia trees, also called trumpet trees have golden yellow, pink, and purple flowers. These trees are highly ornamental and grow 20-30 feet. They make a great single statement or can be pretty accents for larger yards. Tabebuia trees bloom for more than a month, but unfortunately not through the summer.
Bougainvillea is an immensely showy and hardy plant. It is virtually pest free and disease resistant. It’s long arching branches are thorny and bear heart shaped leaves. The flowers have a range of colors including; white pink, orange, purple, and burgundy.
The Bougainvillea is versatile and can be a sizeable tree. It can spread itself vertically on a wall or climb up a trellis. It makes one of the best options for hedges, bushes, and curb liners.
Formosa Azaleas bloom with lavender and pink flowers on a 4-8 foot tall shrub. The large showy flowers bloom in early spring and attract hummingbirds and other wildlife. The plant maintains some green foliage throughout the year making it ideal for privacy screens and backdrops for a seasonal flower bed.
